Babcock Ranch received the Pivot & Persist award from the Florida Economic Development Council

Babcock Ranch received the Pivot & Persist award from the Florida Economic Development Council at the 2021 Annual conference held in Orlando October 13-15.

FEDC hosts the Florida Economic Development Conference each year and takes the opportunity to recognize Florida’s best economic developers during the conference.

2020 disrupted nearly everything in economic development and hit local businesses especially hard; however, with crisis comes the opportunity to innovate and pivot, staying true to established goals under unprecedented circumstances. This award is to recognize those EDOs who rose to the occasion and persisted, demonstrating dedication and commitment to the local economy while proving to be a critical resource during the crisis and into recovery. Examples may include crisis communications efforts, recovery campaigns, attraction campaigns, and support of local employers and/or partners.

Established in 1987, The Edison Best New Product Awards™ recognizes excellence in new product and service development, marketing, human-centered design, innovation excellence and leadership. The competition is open to innovative organizations across the globe, and each year a diverse field of finalists ranging from small start-ups to Fortune 500 companies convene for presentation of the prestigious awards. When the Edison Awards agreed to move the annual event to Fort Myers for three years beginning in 2021, we saw an opportunity to reach key decision-makers for the type of companies we’re working to attract to our innovative, sustainable new town. By coming on board as a sponsor, we would have a prominent speaking role during the traditional educational forum and innovators showcase to be held at the conference leading up to the awards gala. We were able to expand on that by securing an opportunity to host a tour of Babcock Ranch as one of the optional field trips offered for attendees on the day following the awards.

In early March, with registrations for the April 22nd event severely lagging due to corporate restrictions on attendance and participation in indoor events due to COVID-19, the Edison Awards team had two options – take everything online, or find an outdoor venue to accommodate a hybrid live/digital edition of the 2021 Edison Awards. A visit to Babcock Ranch on March 6th sparked the idea of boosting attendance by making the “Meet the Innovators Forum” an outdoors Earth Day Celebration at the world’s first solar-powered town. With just 45 days notice, we embraced the challenge to pivot into the role of primary host of a hybrid live/live-streamed production reaching a global audience.

Educational presentations and panel discussions, moderated by renowned PBS and CNN journalist Miles O’Brien, took place under the band shell for the outdoor audience as well as digital attendees around the globe. The Edison Awards replaced its traditional trade show exhibition hall with socially-distanced field trips showcasing key competitive advantages of Babcock Ranch. While pre-recorded segments streamed to the global live-stream audience, we were able to do industry-specific deep-dive familiarization tours providing small group immersion experiences in targeted sectors of STEAM education, sustainable technologies and green energy.

In addition to the live and digital audiences reached via the live-stream program, video segments showcasing innovations recognized with 2021 Edison Awards, including Babcock Ranch, were part of a half-hour program produced and distributed by Miles O’Brien. The Babcock Ranch feature story also aired on NPR’s Evening Edition newscast.

The pivot to an outdoor event proved successful in boosting live participation. More than 200 key influencers made the trip to Babcock Ranch for the Earth Day event, including decision makers for targeted industry leaders such as Arthrex, Ampaire, Lanzatech, Black & Veatch, EcoSpears, Redwire and FutureLogic.

FPL Partners with Edison Awards to Celebrate Nation’s Most Innovative Companies

FORT MYERS, Fla. (PRWEB) April 08, 2021

The Edison Awards is pleased to announce Florida Power & Light Company (FPL) as a new gold sponsor for its 2021 Edison Awards. In its 34th year, The Edison Awards recognizes international innovation and entrepreneurship in 15 categories. The event will be held in Fort Myers as a hybrid virtual and in-person experience from April 21-23, 2021, including an Earth Day celebration at Babcock Ranch, America’s first solar-powered town in partnership with FPL.

“We’re looking forward to a long and successful partnership with FPL,” said Edison Universe Executive Director Frank Bonafilia. “There are a number of unique opportunities that exist between the Edison Awards’ support for innovation and FPL, including their new 35 Mules innovation hub.”

In September 2020, 35 Mules – an innovation hub powered by FPL – opened its doors in Juno Beach, Fla., welcoming six early-stage companies in the energy, water and energy-adjacent industries. The startups are utilizing more than 90 years of FPL and NextEra Energy insights, skills and solutions to help bring their brightest ideas to life faster, smarter and at scale further supporting the state’s economic growth and flourishing business environment. 35 Mules offers each of the startup companies a dedicated workspace on campus, access to subject matter experts, executive coaching, and a grant to put toward their ventures. Applications for the second cohort will open in summer 2021.

“Our goal with 35 Mules is to foster innovation by attracting the best startups and entrepreneurs from around the world and help them grow their businesses right here in Florida,” said Crystal Stiles, senior director of economic development. “We know Florida is the best state in the nation to live, work and build your business. We look forward to welcoming the Edison Awards to the Sunshine State and showcasing all of the resources our state has to offer.”

FPL is the largest energy company in the United States as measured by retail electricity produced and sold and serves more than 5.6 million customer accounts or more than 11 million residents across Florida. Its team is committed to delivering America’s best energy value to its customers – electricity that’s not just among the cleanest and the most reliable in the country, but also affordable. Its parent company, NextEra Energy, is the world’s largest generator of renewable energy from the wind and sun and is a world leader in battery storage.

Babcock Ranch developer Kitson & Partners and FPL partnered and broke ground on the FPL Babcock Ranch Solar Energy Center in 2015. In 2018, FPL created the largest combined solar-plus-storage facility operating in the U.S. when it added a 10-megawatt battery storage system to the FPL Babcock Ranch Solar Energy Center. The system captures energy generated by the solar energy center and stores it for later use, improving reliability for thousands of local homes and businesses. In 2020, the FPL Babcock Preserve Solar Energy Center came online, creating a total of 150 megawatts of solar power generated at the ranch.

Rochelle Graham-Campbell

Rochelle Graham-Campbell

Rochelle Alikay Graham-Campbell is CEO and Founder of Alikay Naturals, a beauty & lifestyle brand. The company’s mission is to be a leader in providing quality products and services that promotes education and healthy beauty practices, raise awareness of natural ingredients and support underserved communities.

Ms. Graham-Campbell’s Story

Long before founders Rochelle Alikay Graham-Campbell and Demond Campbell were young college students producing formulas and business strategies for Alikay Naturals™ in their kitchen, they were Black hair care consumers.

Using the knowledge of the benefits of natural ingredients that Rochelle learned from her herbalist YaYa in the Caribbean, Rochelle began to formulate products that addressed the needs of her tightly coiled hair as well as her skin care needs.

Containing no petroleum, mineral oil, alcohol, parabens, sulfate or silicone, Alikay Naturals™ products use the healing properties found in natural & organic ingredients to nourish and replenish moisture from inside out.

Describe the most significant influence that led you to your line of work:
At the start of Rochelle’s natural hair journey, she cut her damaged hair and began the search for natural products. During her search, she learned that most of the products on the market contained harsh chemicals. The natural products were expensive and the affordable products were harmful. Also, Rochelle didn’t see anything that catered specifically to women with kinky hair, only textures with looser curls. So she decided to create her own products to achieve healthy hair goals, which were inspired by her Jamaican roots.

Their first product was the Essential 17 Hair Growth Oil. Rochelle created the product for herself, but her followers noticed a healthy change and growth in her hair and immediately wanted to buy Essential 17. They began by making only a few batches, and the demand grew, thus starting the Alikay Naturals brand.

What do your family, friends and colleagues say about your accomplishments?:
Proud! What were doing is more than just creating hair products. Black Onyx World LLC produces a lifestyle for the mind, body, and soul. Rochelle was coined a pioneer in the industry because she founded a solution for people who were once considered an afterthought.

The multicultural woman has always come second in the hair care industry. But at Alikay Naturals, we love and respect the multicultural woman. We’re here to serve her and we believe that she too deserves herbalistic authentic beauty! Her needs are a priority and she deserves quality. We’ve changed what people consider beautiful and we’ve helped to introduce our culture to the world. Those closest to us consider that very impactful.
.Tell us about something that made you grow the most as a leader:
Chapter 5 of Rochelle ‘s book, 90 Days to C.E.O: A Guide To Avoid Business Pitfalls And Unlock The Secrets Of Entrepreneurship talks about the importance of self-care, especially for entrepreneurs. “Self-love and believing in myself has become so important to me,” she said. “In order for the world to love and accept you, you have to love yourself first. You have to know how amazing you are and not accept anything less than what you truly deserve.”

Share your ideas for mentoring the professional development of young entrepreneurs.
Always trust your gut. A lot of new entrepreneurs enter spaces and second guess their own judgment. “I have found that trusting your gut will take you far,” said Rochelle. “Also, I challenge you to always continue to expand your mind and learn something new. In my book, “90 Days to CEO” I talk about the importance of leadership growth. An organization can only continue to grow if its leader continues to grow as an individual and as a CEO.

Keenan Beasley

Keenan Beasley

Keenan Beasley is the founder of Venture Noire. This non-profit mentors and develops underprivileged diverse entrepreneurs and provides them with access to capital.

Mr. Beasley’s Story

Today, only around 1% of venture capital dollars goes to entrepreneurs of color. Coupled with discriminatory lending practices and institutional bias, America has undercut over 1 million minority-owned businesses totaling over 9 million potential jobs and $300 billion in collective national income. Venture Noire seeks to correct this disparity by facilitating projects with public and private markets that tackle minority workforce creation and development. One way we achieve this is by providing grants and gifts in kind to startups within the program which act as a Friends and Family-sized investments. This allows these startups to test their service or products in the marketplace and achieve the crucial MVP (minimal viable product) and use-case that many Venture Capitalists look for when deciding whether or not to invest. Since launching, the organization has facilitated the distribution of nearly $180,000 in non-dilutive capital. As we look ahead to 2021, Venture Noire is currently seeking to raise $5M to expand our scope and launch additional programs to continue to attack this crucial mission.

Describe the most significant influence that led you to your line of work:
“We believe the world needs new institutions and thinking to unlock the chains of generational poverty. Income inequality is a global crisis that has been expanded upon through systemic racism and more recently the impacts of COVID-19. Venture Noire identifies global and regional problems, conducts research on potential solutions, and executes those solutions in the form of tangible projects and managed cohorts A driving factor behind Venture Noire is our mission to help close the Racial Wealth Gap in America. One of the fastest, most effective ways to do that is through business creation. By supporting these early stage, diverse entrepreneurs we’re helping to level the playing field and create additional opportunities for the Black community to close the wealth gap.”

What do your family, friends and colleagues say about your accomplishments?:
My family circle is very supportive and proud. Recognition like this is as much theirs as it is mine. Being an entrepreneur and non profit leader is a job of passion. I’m thankful that my circle understands and shares my passion.

Tell us about something that made you grow the most as a leader:
Like many company leaders, COVID provided very unique challenges. My main goal was to protect the business and our employees. When you’re working from home there is no stopping point – no set time to “leave the office.” So my biggest challenge was preventing fatigue and burn out. I did this by creating boundaries for the team and business by setting clear and realistic goals and objectives.

Share your ideas for mentoring the professional development of young entrepreneurs.
Having access to resources is critical for young Black entrepreneurs. While many businesses in the tech industry might be working towards improving the diversity of their workforces, there are still very few people of colour at the top of companies. In addition to access to capital, Venture Noire provides curriculum and mentorship to a diverse set of over 1,000 Black and minority entrepreneurs. It’s key to create a safe space that allows people to share candid stories without ego or fear. Venture Noire as a non profit is a perfect mechanism for this. Our mentorship is purely based in the desire to help and advance the community and culture forward.

To date, what project is your greatest success? What is the story behind that innovation?
2020 birthed two organizations that I’m extremely proud of. The first being the creation of Venture Noire as a true minority venture catalyst organization in the minority community. We’ve approached this organization with a common goal and have been humble enough to learn along the journey. The second was the launch of athleisure hair care brand Sunday II Sunday. Launching a brand/company in the middle of a pandemic requires intense fortitude. This business is built off the desire to help women find a balance between their beauty and health goals. It was critical for us to launch despite the hurdles because self care has never been more important. I’m proud to say that we are doing our part to improve the lives of thousands (and one day millions) of people around the country.

Davyeon Ross

Davyeon Ross

Davyeon Ross is co-founder of ShotTracker, a revolutionary sensor-based system that delivers statistics and analytics to teams, fans and broadcast networks instantly, enhancing the experience of the game — both on and off the court.

Mr. Ross’s Story:

I am from Trinidad and Tobago and came to the US on a basketball scholarship to Benedictine College where I played collegiate basketball and studied Computer Science, Math and Business. In 2013 my co-founder and I started ShotTracker. ShotTracker is a sensor based system that tracks statistics and analytics with sub-second latency. Providing data to coaches, players, fans, broadcasters and others.

At ShotTracker we have filed 26 patents of which 17 have been issued. Our solution has been installed in over 70 programs and in 2016 for the first time ever we partnered with the NCAA to deliver electronic data to the bench area in a collegiate basketball game.

Describe the most significant influence that led you to your line of work
By nature I’m a problem solver and very solution oriented. Influence and inspiration always manifest itself in many different ways. Personally for me, I’m inspired by curiosity and the ability to create and solve complex problems. I’m also inspired by the people I surround myself with. ShotTracker lives at the intersection of sports and technology. An industry that has many hurdles, large established partners who don’t want to be disrupted and an environment that has many technical limitations. My passion for sports, tech and innovation is critical to my line of work.

What do your family, friends and colleagues say about your accomplishments?
My family, friends and colleagues are always in awe of what we have been able to do at ShotTracker. Those close to me know the struggle and challenges we had to overcome to get to where we are. They also have a strong appreciation for the village that has supported and allowed us to be successful.

Tell us about something that made you grow the most as a leader:
I have always seen my most growth as a leader during challenging times. Adversity has been my best teacher. Start ups are incredibly hard and it’s a lot of work. 2020 has been an emotional and stressful year for people and in general, people of color, however, it’s been a great teacher. 2020 provided us with a strong appreciation for others (Team), humility and gratitude that we are here to fight another day and we have a responsibility to the ones who will follow in our path. As I continue to lead my team, I’m humbled at their support and it continues to provide me the necessary stamina to continue executing, pushing and leading.

Share your ideas for mentoring the professional development of young entrepreneurs:
Daily I have conversations with young entrepreneurs and I’m always willing to share my learnings in the hope they learn from my mistakes. My advice includes, take risk, you don’t score if you don’t shoot, and you can go further together, get a good team.

To date, what project is your greatest success? What is the story behind that innovation?
Greatest success as it relates to innovation is being the first company to deliver FCC approved resonant charging in a basketball. As you cam imagine, if one is going to put a sensor in a basketball, you either need a large battery which would disrupt the integrity of the basketball or make it rechargeable. Seeing that the sensor is implemented in the ball as part of the manufacturing process, it’s critical to be able to charge over a distance and not utilize traditional methods of charging such as inductive or contact.

Prior to ShotTracker taking on this project, two large public companies attempted this task and failed. However, our amazing ShotTracker team was able to persevere thru the challenges and after 2 years and many long hours, we were one of the first FCC approved resonant charging solutions in the market. We also delivered on a rechargeable ball rack that was the first of its kind.
